Little Corn, Day 2

22 10 2004

Finally got some sleep because we went to bed early last night. Got up around 5:30 naturally due to the light, got ready and went to breakfast. At the lodge we learned from Matty (dive shop) that his bike had been stolen overnight, but one of the locals had woken him up to tell him that the guy had been caught by the local vigilante group (no police on little corn), tied up and driven around on a boat to ridicule him, AND they hung him up by his neck for a while to make an example of him. Then they transported him over to the big island to turn him over to the police there.
I started the day with OW4 at a brilliant dive site called Yellowtail. after completing our skills, we swam around a bit and saw a 5′ nurse shark & remora.
Then Meghan joined me for another dive (Jake’s place) where she was the UW photographer and I was the UW naturalist, identifying corals, fish, etc. These were two of the electives for our advanced OW diver course. We saw a southern stingray on that dive, self-buried in the sand, then Matty roused it into ‘flying’ away. after that dive we went a bit north of the dive shop looking for something to eat for cheap or who who would take American dollars. We settled on Ritz cheese crackers and a pineapple juice. We switched roles for the next dive at Grant’s cave. Righteous overhead environments in this system of caves. Damn camera battery ran out just when there was supposed to be 20 mins left, but I got off some nice shots of a school of fish and a conch. For dinner, Wayne made a brilliant nutty pesto pasta w/ eggplant and LOBSTER cakes w/ remoulade. I think I had thirds.
