Blue ice

25 03 2007

Blue ice! I have finally seen blue ice! I am not sure what my draw to blue ice is, but I have never seen it in person. It seems so much colder and beautiful than just ice that we get in the winter or that you make in your freezer. It makes glaciers really seem like glaciers. It makes glaciers seem deeper, more impressive and untouchable.
I have been to St. Mary’s glacier in Colorado, but I didn’t find it that impressive. It just looks like a patch of snow. Now I am here at Perito Moreno, a large glacier in the South of Argentina, and it represents what I pictured glaciers to be. It is a huge glacier that goes back into the mountains for at least 14km. The face of the glacier is 55m (150ft) high, and about every 20 minutes a huge piece of ice breaks off and falls into the water below with a thunderous crash. The ice wall and the water make for great echoes, so the seemingly still water sounds like a rushing river just from the splashes against the glacier. The glacier has giant crevasses, and of course, it is blue ice. I imagined that this is where penguins would be very happy, but there are no penguins here. Just ice, mountains, and a lake.
The glacier is on a beautiful aqua lake. I didn’t expect to find this color of water in the middle of mountains; doesn’t water like this belong in the Caribbean? Apparently, as the glacier moves, it crushes the dirt into a fine powder that then refracts light differently when in water so it looks opaque, sparkley and aqua.
It is hard to take your eyes away. This is what I really wanted to see in South America, and now I am here!!
