Countdown to Carnaval
13 02 2007Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days… got sick (again) in Fortaleza but now (as Meghan has so perfectly put it) we are in Paradise. We have a 3 block downhill walk to the beach and our room has a panoramic view out to turquoise waters stretching to the horizon, free breakfasts, ensuite bath, mini-fridge, and fan. All this for $17 per night. If you ever come to Canoa Quebrada, I recommend Pousada Europa. The owner is Dutch so of course you can speak English.
There is a perfect breeze that blows all the time and keeps everything from getting hot, the waters aren’t polluted, and a large pizza, fresh juice, and a beer costs around $11. This makes it fairly easy to meet our $50/day budget. Why would we leave?
Carnaval!
We went inland today (to the town of Aracati) to buy our bus ticket to Recife (where we already booked the Best Western for our Carnaval days) and while there, we passed by a hair salon so we went in. I asked her to use the clippers by making a buzzing noise and moving my hand through my hair. I then told her “todo numero uno”, which was Spanish, but close enough to Portuguese that she figured out that I wanted my head shaved. Below is a picture I took just now with the crappy webcam they had at this internet cafe. Don’t worry we took a hi-res one with the Sony.

Oh, the funniest thing happened when we were walking to dinner tonight. Usually the locals think we’re Scandinavian (Finland was specifically guessed once), but tonight I saw an older couple who looked white enough (I know, a terrible stereotype) to speak English. So I said, “Hello,” and waved. The woman started speaking to us in a language I’ve never heard. Apparently she is Swedish and she thought we look so much like Swedes that we must be. She even challenged the fact that we weren’t by asking us where our ancestors came from. Of course, Meghan mentioned that her grandmother was Swedish and that calmed her down a bit. Not very many Americans around here.
Hey baldy! HA HA…..Love the photo! And of course, the shirt just makes all the difference! I’m glad you are enjoying your stay….it sounds like the paradise you are calling it. I’m sure most of us reading about this place would gladly join you at this point. We have had such a long stretch of terribly cold weather and ice/sleet/snow that we are all ready for warmer weather. The description of your locale sounds like a dream come true! And I’m so glad the prices are helping you stay within your budget. I’m sorry to hear about illnesses….that’s a real pain when you are traveling. Hope things go well for the rest of the journey. I’ll keep watching for the next installment!

Hi y’all….just had to send another comment! Britney Spears must be reading your blogs!! The big news on TV this weekend was that she had SHAVED HER HEAD ! I assume she read your blogs and saw Stephen’s bald pate and decided to do the same. HA HA…..anyway, you are setting the trend, so to speak.
