Ahora estamos en Belem
6 02 2007So here we are, another hour ahead of normal life in the U.S. of A. We now are at approximately the same longitude as Greenland. This has not resulted in jet-lag, per se, but perhaps a bit of boat-lag. We left the boat behind (good riddance) and hiked with our mochilas grandes to the Hotel (hostel really), where we found (of course) all the other backpackers from the boat. We reconnected with Laura (whom we met on the boat) and Ricardo and decided to brave the eateries down at the waterfront market. This is basically eating “street food”, which is generally not recommended. It happens to be very tasty. We each had two plates of food, one of which had rice, potatoes, and some kind of salad, the other had a couple of pieces of fried fish - Dourado, a very tasty catfish. The four of us also shared 1L of guarana soda and 1L of good-old Coca-Cola (tastes much better than in the U.S. because they use real sugar - no corn syrup), which I have sarcastically begun calling Champagne Americano. All this for about $3 per person.

Great to get an update on your adventures!!!! We are still back in the states, leading our boring lives, while you are there eating bizarre food, paying 70 cents for meals and $17 for hotels. We are stuck in traffic, waiting in lines and bumping into people all over the place. Next time you take a trip, you need to take a nurse (me) along- love, Main Squeeze
