Dolphins and Machete-peeled Brazil nuts
29 01 2007This morning we got up at 5:30 for a sunrise boat trip to see the dolphins - we saw some grey and some pink, although they refuse to be photographed. They never surface for very long and you don’t know where that will be so you can never set up a proper shot.
After that, we went on a nature hike where Ceciliano showed us how Brazil nuts look when they fall from the tree. If you have seen the woody triangular prismic shell, that is not the whole of it. Several of those shells are again packaged in an outer shell similar in appearance to a coconut. It was something to see Ceciliano deftly slice away the woody shell with his machete, only a half inch from his fingers. Also on the nature hike we saw: dragonflies, huge anthills, huge moths, daddy-longlegs, arboreal ant colonies, tree bark used for weaving baskets, lizards, a tree whose sap is oily and used for torches, bright red tree roots, huge vines, a camouflaged frog (I spotted it!), a weird looking yellow bug, etc.
Back at the lodge we had some delicious pan-fried white fish that I gathered is the famous Pirarucu, which can grow to over 7 feet long! Very tasty - best fresh water fish I have ever had. Possibly best fish in general.
Tonight we went camping and since we didn’t catch any Piranhas, our dinner was salad and chicken, cooked/smoked over a campfire, which was quite tasty. I took coordinates of our campsite in the Jungle, for your mapping pleasure. The jungle is damn hot when you are fully clothed and sitting near a fire.
