Update - recovery in Colombia

21 01 2007

Well, the problem with the sopa de pollo a few days ago on the Baylon became a full-on bout of Montezuma’s revenge. We have been staying in Leticia, Colombia for the past few days, we are OK, no worries. But wouldn’t you know it, just as the diarrhea is starting to subside, now I’ve got a nasty cough. I was afraid it was becoming bronchitis last night, but it seems to have dried up a bit. Don’t worry, antibiotics are cheap down here. We picked up a name-brand one (it said it was comparable to Zithromax - my favorite!). Haven’t taken any yet since the cough seems to be getting better.

Needless to say we are taking it easy instead of hopping on the next slow boat to Manaus.

I am really stoked for those of you who have contributed by posting! Keep it up!

Hey Stephen…now I’m going to have to act like an old auntie…keep an eye and ear on that cough! I know you know yourself well enough to take care, but having a cough follow a bout with Montezuma could weaken your resistance to other unidentified ambient objects . Plus, if your cough lasts more than 2 to 3 days, you might be developing a secondary infection, which is usually bacterial. So, take care and use those antibiotics if you start getting either a productive cough or a hacky cough with shortness of breath (SOB), or especially if you have the cough with a fever or feel run down.

Enough of the lecture. I’m really enjoying your travelogue and trying to picture the scenery, etc. And I hope you are already feeling better by the time you read this.

Love to both of you,
Zoom

Hey guys- great to hear from you- I have sure suffered from ole Montezuma and it is not fun. Hang in there. It too shall pass, no pun intended. It is great hearing your travels- what are the people like?? Are you getting by communicating with the folks?

Anyway, I didn’t know you were planning to stop in my country…actually I have never been in Leticia…I’m not sure if I would risk to go there myself…
We have many wonderful places to visit, too bad we don’t feel save to try!

Keep safe and enjoy this wonderful world; for some people like me who had only dream to do it!

Hi Pamela!
Thanks so much for posting! It is great to hear from you! Ok, I’m going to try to answer in Spanish (lo siento, no se como hacer acentos):
Nos gusta Leticia. Era muy segura pero un poco extrano porque hay un basa militaria alla entonces hay muchas personas quien llevan armas todo el tiempo. Queriamos ir a otros partes de Colombia, pero Steve (mi marido) estaba infermo. Oimos de otros que Colombia es tan bonita y no tenian problemas, pero yo se las historias que mi tio y otros Colombianos me dijeron.
Ojala, algun dia, podemos regresar a Colombia!
Espero que todo este bien con tu y tu familia!

That’s something you’ll find from most of us (Colombians) we will go the extra mile for tourist to see a different picture of our country …we just keep hoping ourselves for better days.

Cartagena (North coast) is a beautiful safe spot…San Andres islan (and Providencia island from there) a piece of paradise in the Atlantic.

Por estos dias estamos enterrados en nieve aqui en Toronto y enfermos (casi todos en casa) con el Flu….I need a vacation..I’m already planning to head south!
