4 AM Mudhole, somewhere in the Andes
12 01 2007When I awoke, I assumed the bus was not moving because we were stopped for gas. Oh, no - it was stopped because it was stuck in the mud. Looking out the window, I saw a bus-sized pit of brown water that I’m guessing the bus driver was trying to avoid by going up and around to the right, when he got the bus stuck. They got the second floor passengers off the bus while we slept (one of the perks for paying an extra $1.30 for the downstairs compartment I guess), and dug the bus out. At some point they felt they dug enough because the driver got back in and peeled out in reverse, flinging mud all over the window. Apparently he should have just driven through the scary-looking pond of mud because that’s the way we ended up going. All the excitement woke up a few of the men in the back and they proceeded to talk for the next hour so I looked out the window since I couldn’t sleep. Great views of the Andes, even in the low light of night.
