We were just in Singapore for 4 days and confirmed our suspicions that it is a really cool city/country. As rumored, it is immaculate: chewing gum is banned and littering comes with a hefty fine. It is a beautiful city with gardens, trees, and flowers everywhere; groomed hedges line the highways. Simultaneously, everything seems very modern with stainless steel everywhere, curved escalators, all the latest and greatest technology, a very efficient subway system that is always connected to shopping centers where you can get sushi without having to ascend to middle earth. So in Malaysia, at just about every restaurant, they have a dish called Roti Canai. It is pronounced how you think, except the C is said like a CH. It is a bit like Naan bread, but with the thickness of a Crepe and some of it let to become flaky on the grill. It is served with a small dish of curry. I had that for breakfast this morning. It was my great idea to suck it up, save money and take an overnight bus from Luang Prabang to Vientian instead of fly. Read the rest of this entry »

When we travel we are always reminded of what a small world it can be. We shared a tuk-tuk to the waterfalls yesterday with a guy from Evergreen, Colorado, and a couple that had been at Cardiff University the same time I was doing my study abroad there! Later that night we met up with three other English girls, 2 of whom had also been at Cardiff the same time I was there and one even lived in the same complex I did! Small world. In Hanoi we went to a fantastic water puppetry show. The stage is actually a pool of water perhaps 3 feet deep backed by a short bamboo curtain. Above the bamboo curtain was a model wat (or temple). Musicians sat to the side and played an amazing assortment of instruments that we had never seen before. Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight we went to a restaurant recommended in our travel book. As we suspected, given the past recommendations for Hanoi, prices were twice as much as the book quoted. So we decided to be adventurous and eat at a place we passed along the way that appeared to be packed with Vietnamese people. Read the rest of this entry »

Yes, it is one of the places mentioned in the book, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, and for good reason. We had seen pictures in travel books and on the posters all over Vietnam, but (to sound a bit cliche), it’s not the same unless you go there.

So here we are in Hue, Vietnam, and we want to see a few sights. One of which is the Vinh Moc Tunnel system, used by the VC during the (as it’s known here) American War, as well as a war memorial cemetary. Unfortunately, the package tours on buses want to pack the tunnels with 8 other sights Read the rest of this entry »

OK, I feel like I need to be honest about this. This may come as a shock to many, although some may have had their suspicions. I couldn’t think of a perfect way to tell everyone, so I made this post. I hope you understand.
