Riding in Bemos
18 04 2008After Lembeh Strait we decided to take the adventurous and cheaper route once again to nearby Tangkoko National Park to see the cute little primate called the tarsier. We could have paid a lot to have our own personal driver take us there and take us to Manado the following morning, but we opted for plan B, and though we ended up not seeing the tarsiers, we are so glad we went just for the experience of riding in a bemo.
Moms, plug your ears or cover your eyes… riding in a bemo means riding in the back of a pick-up truck with wooden benches for seats. (It didn’t seem as dangerous as riding on the back of a motorcycle with questionable brakes and our huge backpacks strapped to us, which we also did to get to Tangkoko). In our bemo, there were 13 people and all of their luggage in the back and 3 people in the cab! It was a great way to travel, especially at night. It was like having a giant moon roof where you could look up and see trees, stars and fireflies. On the way back, we took another bemo, and when it started to rain, they just pulled out a big tarp that everyone held over their heads. What a honeymoon
