Curry for Breakfast (in Paradise)

9 03 2008

So in Malaysia, at just about every restaurant, they have a dish called Roti Canai. It is pronounced how you think, except the C is said like a CH. It is a bit like Naan bread, but with the thickness of a Crepe and some of it let to become flaky on the grill. It is served with a small dish of curry. I had that for breakfast this morning.

We are sunburned because we spent all day yesterday snorkelling around the island. It was the best snorkelling I have ever done - we saw thousands of fish, including ones that live around (and get very protective of) anemones. Yes, just like Nemo (clownfish). Barracuda as well. I even found my first blue-spotted stingray! No diving yet, although a month-long Divemaster course did cross our minds because it is so pleasant here. The water is such an amazing color I first thought it was fake - artificially dyed turquoise or something. As before, click on the Map View button to get an idea. We are staying on Kecil (little) island on the left (West). The snorkelling we did yesterday was on the southwestern tip of Besar (big) island on the right (East).

We have a fab view of the waves of blue water coming in from our sub-$15/night chalet room. The breeze that is driving the waves also has the nice effect of keeping things cool and keeping the mosquito problem to a minimum. I could get used to this.

So anyway, today we stayed out of the sun and read our books and napped. I guess we needed it because we both still hurt. I haven’t had a sunburn on my back like this since I was a kid. Wait, I still am a kid.

Oh, and today is our 50th month anniversary of our first date, so I had curry noodles for dinner!

Hi Neenan and Meggie!
Happy 50th anniversary!! It does sound like you have found paradise, and I love to read about your adventures! I’m not sure about curry for breakfast, but it must be good. Take care of your sunburns and enjoy the snorkeling and/or diving to come. See you in a couple of months! Love the photos!!
Love, Mom

Hey! How was the diving? We are now in Kuala Terengganu, sitting in an Internetcafe with 50 crazy, screaming malaysian kids playing counterstrike. Its a pretty nice town, but there is not that much to do here. We arrived very late this tuesday, so we searched for an hotel for several hours without success. At last we found one with rooms available, but it was really bad standard and it smelled terrible.

Tomorrow we’re moving on, to Cherating. Will probably try the surfinglessons, but i don’t think that i’m an natural talent so i’ll be glad if i stay alive. See you later,

Cool, enjoy Cherating… it is pretty chill. I think we went to that internet cafe in K. Terengganu also! Except it was the high volume machine gun and grenade sounds instead of screaming when we were there.
